WHAT CAUGHT MY INTEREST: The bizarre collection of genre tags on the Fringe site -- this show is listed as being simultaneously Opera/New Music, Modern Dance, Physical theater/Clowning, and Sci-fi/Mystery/Horror. The mind boggles.
Just who do you think you are, anyway?
I'm a multidisciplinary artist from Minneapolis. I've acted in pieces for Jon Ferguson and Live Action Set among others, and created music and sound design for a number of Ferguson's works; most recently The Brutes, presented by his company, Theatre Forever. I've shown dance work at the Walker Art Center Choreographers' Evening, The Illusion Theater, and Laurie Van Wieren's 9X22 at Bryant Lake Bowl.
So what's the big idea?
It's All True is a piece involving text, movement/dance and moments of pedestrian opera to look at people who are pushing the limits of human potential, no matter whether their efforts are above or below the radar of others' awareness. We will explore the fluidity of meaning as different characters come upon the same turn of phrase, each — of course — with slightly differing results. It will live in a world with subtle elements of science fiction. This all sounds rather serious, though I intend the piece to be absurd and funny, as well. The plot of this piece is in development at this time.
How did you come up with a screwy idea like that?
The title is in part a reference to the idea that we contain multitudes. My interests in the nature of meaning and human potential are long-standing. I'm obsessed with the idea of people evolving, both in understanding and as beings. The particular combination of text, dance theatre and pedestrian opera simply makes sense to me.
Why should I care?
It will be vibrant, bizarre and raw. I believe you will find my ideas, movement, text, and music compelling. I seek new forms and ways of communication, yet want to present a legible piece. It will be eye-opening, funny, dark and celebratory. You'll also want to be ready for other episodes.
