In advance of “The Art of Indigenous Resistance”, All My Relations Gallery is hosting a community art night on Monday, February 9th. An evening of artmaking and community exchange, the event provides an opportunity to express activism through art.
“The Art of Indigenous Resistance” opens February 27th at All My Relations as part of a 6-city tour orchestrated by Honor the Earth, an organization founded by activist Winona LaDuke and Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. The show in Minneapolis includes curation from All My Relations Gallery’s Graci Horne and Honor the Earth’s Kim Smith.
Graci Horne, the Gallery Associate from All My Relations, says when Honor the Earth first approached the gallery about hosting the show, she thought it would be instrumental to include a community art component.
She’s done a similar concept before, while earning a degree in museum studies at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Called Art in the Raw, community members were invited to express themselves, based on different themes each year. The curation students would then hang the art in the gallery. The program was about giving the community a voice for one night, she says.
Creating art has always been an integral part of protest, Horne says. In large protests such as anti-mascot rallies, community members express their creativity through sign-making and other kinds of expression.
For each stop on the tour, Honor the Earth wanted to include local artists, so for the All My Relations show, Lucie Skjefte, who gained notoriety recently the her wheat-paste image she created for the anti-mascot rally at TCF Stadium in November will be featured along with Minnesota artist Star Wallowingbull.In addition, work created at the Community Art Night will be included on one of the walls of the gallery.
Dyani White Hawk Polk, Director and Curator for All My Relations, says the gallery will be providing canvasses, paint, paintbrushes, pallet knives and pallet paper for the event. Participants may bring their own materials as well and if they don’t finish on Monday Evening, they may come back and finish it later or take it home. Besides Horne, the workshop will also be lead by NACDI’s Community Organizer Ashley Fairbanks, White Hawk Polk says.
While what people choose to create for their artmaking is entirely up to them, Horne and White Hawk imagine some topics might include issues such as the Keystone Pipeline, sports mascots and Native sex trafficking.
The Community Art Night for The Art of Indigenous Resistance takes place Monday, February 9th from 6-8 p.m. at All My Relations Gallery, 1414 E. Franklin Ave., Minneapolis. The exhibition runs February 27th-May 9th, with an opening reception on February 7th, when Winona LaDuke will be in attendance.
