A lyrical and thought-provoking examination of slavery in the United States, Threads Dance Project's The Secrets of Slave Songs uses traditional negro spirituals composed by William Banfield and others to illuminate African-Americans' historical journey. This evening-length dance work explores the idea of the traditional negro spiritual as a secret language of communication among slaves to express the triumph, trials and sorrow on the theme of escape, and puts a spotlight on the origin of the complex relationship between white and black Americans that continues to this day.
