After winning the Best Short Documentary Award at the 2013 Minneapolis Saint Paul International Film Festival for his story about The Uptown Theater entitled NED ABDUL NEEDS MORE RETAIL SPACE, writer/director Dan S returns with an ambitious new feature about the nature of fatherhood and the death of record stores entitled OLD MAN.
OLD MAN tells the story of the rise and fall of ALBUMS ON THE HILL, the last record store in Boulder, Colorado, a town that was once home to more music stores than any city in America. OLD MAN unfolds as Andrew Schneidkraut, the proprietor of ALBUMS ON THE HILL and father to director Dan S, reflects on his life and his failures through intense personal anecdotes and poetry. Dan tries desperately to reconnect with his father while he recalls difficult stories from his childhood and reflects on his undying reverence for his father through first person narration and striking still imagery. While father and son try to make sense of their lives thus far, the record store at the center of OLD MAN serves as a powerful metaphor for obsolescence – a place of communion and comfort that may never exist again.
Said Dan S of OLD MAN, “it was one of the most difficult and rewarding experiences of my life and likely the best film I will ever create. I’m excited to introduce the world to Andy, a remarkable genius, gentle soul and my all time favorite human.”
Dan S is a resident of Minneapolis best known for his award-winning and highly controversial narrative features SEEKING WELLNESS and INVINCIBLE FORCE. Dan has been working in film and video for nearly 20 years, having accumulated dozens of credits, though OLD MAN is only his second attempt at the documentary form.
