The problem of sexual assault in the military has become increasingly serious as the rate of women’s representation has increased. Military sexual trauma, the effect of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment during military service, affects nearly one in four women veterans.
This workshop will address the increase in women’s military sexual trauma, prosecution of perpetrators, services available to women coping with these issues, the role of international humanitarian law in protecting women, and efforts by the United Nations to meet women’s needs during and after conflict.
Following the workshop and lunch, participants will attend the History Theatre’s performance of Lonely Soldiers: Women at War in Iraq. This play by Helen Benedict tells the real stories of eight women soldiers in Iraq who face challenges both on and off the battlefield.
